After almost four decades, a new penal code is finally being created. Made official on 16 February following its promulgation by the Head of State through Decree No. 21-018/Pr, this new text, divided into three books in 564 articles, was adopted by the National Assembly on 29 December 2020. The aim of the text is to modernise Comorian criminal legislation by introducing new offences that did not exist in the 1982 Code.
Asked after the adoption of the new text by the elected representatives of the Nations, the Inspector General of Judicial Affairs said that this new code now in force « is the result of the work of the committee of five senior judges including four of the Supreme Court and one of the central administration.
